Angoulême

Visit to Angoulême, France

Oct 4 - 5 2018

We arrived in Angouleme by train on a sunny day in October. From the train station, it was a one km walk upward to the old town and the Hotel de Ville,

Hotel de Ville

where we rested on a bench before ambling along the  Avenue Georges Clemenceau

to the Marnot Statue,

which stands on the edge of the plateau that the town centre is built upon. From there you can look down on ranks of  19th century dwellings

The site of our lodgings for the night was down a flight of steps on the Rue Laferrière.

After taking possession of our accommodation, we departed in search of something to eat. Dusk began to fall as we passed the L’église Notre-Dame d’Obézine,

continued along the Boulevard Emile Roux

and the Rue de l'Arsenal

to a bar-restaurant near the Hotel de Ville,

where, in the warmth of several electric heaters, we savoured a tasty meal outside,

before heading back again past the Hotel de Ville

now crowned with orange-yellow lights, and tramped back along the Boulevard Emile Roux

to the steps that descend to the Rue Laferrière,

and the Rue Laferrière itself,

After breakfast in the morning, we headed back up again to the Hotel de Ville,

and then down to the Charente River,

which breathed an air of peace and tranquillity.

But a walk of about a kilometre upriver brought us to a place where things were modestly more lively.

But there is peace and tranquillity here too, because this is France!

When the time came to start the journey home, we headed back up towards the railway

and the bridge that crosses the line.

and boarded our train for home.
